Most walkers use the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger maps (pink covers) for the hills and countryside and the 1:25,000 Outdoor Leisure series (orange covers) or Explorer maps (orange covers) for towns and farmland. These maps are available at Visitor Information Centres and bookshops throughout the region and our online shop.
The Scottish Borders area is covered by Landranger sheets 72 to 75, 79 and 80. There are 1:25,000 Outdoor Leisure Maps covering Central Tweeddale and also the Cheviots. The Scottish Borders are now covered by Explorer maps at 1:25,000, giving more detail for walkers.
There is also a very useful 1:40,000 walkers map from Harvey Maps covering the area between Peebles and St Mary's Loch. This map is printed on waterproof paper.
Alternatively visit our Online Shop or email to purchase maps and walking publications. If you are going on a long walk, even at low level, you should have suitable footwear and take warm and waterproof clothing, a map or guidebook, and some food and drink. This applies at all times of the year. Our hills are rounded rather than rocky but care is still needed, especially in misty conditions, and if you are venturing high you should have a map and compass with you and know how to use them. Inexperienced walkers are advised not to go into the hills alone, especially in winter
